Recent studies have revealed that superfine Merino wool, when worn directly against the skin, can provide relief for individuals with eczema. This discovery contributes to the expanding body of evidence that highlights the health advantages of superfine Merino wool. The findings indicate that this particular type of wool can markedly alleviate the intensity and manifestations of eczema, dispelling the common belief that wool is inherently scratchy and uncomfortable.

What is Eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by dry skin that can crack, become infected with bacteria, and lead to redness and intense itching. It is a condition that can affect as many as 28% of infants worldwide, and its prevalence is on the rise in various regions. To manage this condition, the most widely used treatments involve the consistent use of emollients—moisturizers that are free from cosmetic additives—and topical corticosteroids to alleviate inflammation. Additionally, antibiotics may be prescribed to treat any secondary bacterial infections.

Wool Can Be Advantageous for Those with Eczema

Merino wool clothing stands out for its exceptional breathability across various climates, be it warm or chilly, moist or arid. This natural fibre surpasses the breathability of many traditional clothing fibres, offering superior moisture management. It can absorb and release double the amount of moisture as cotton and a staggering thirtyfold compared to polyester. When in contact with the skin, Merino wool serves as a natural regulator, maintaining a comfortable micro-environment by balancing temperature and moisture levels. Essentially, Merino wool functions akin to an additional layer of skin.

Individuals with eczema often face the challenge of finding suitable clothing that doesn’t irritate their delicate skin. A study conducted by the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Australia has found a comforting solution. The research revealed that clothing crafted from superfine Merino wool, specifically those with a mean fibre diameter of 17.5 microns or less, is not only tolerable for eczema sufferers but also contributes to alleviating the symptoms of the condition. This discovery offers a new avenue of comfort for those affected by eczema, highlighting the importance of fabric choice in managing skin sensitivities.
